But what if they are already installed at LyX installation time? Quite
frankly, when I am on Windows, I hate having to install 3 different
dictionaries for OpenOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird... Couldn't we
optionally ask the user if she wants to reuse any such installed
dictionaries?

I'm not sure about this. We could add an import feature to reuse e.g. Firefox dictionaries, but there's no way to be sure it won't break when Firefox is updated or when they update hunspell etc. It also introduces additional complexity; apps like Firefox can be installed for all users or for the current user (possibly not matching the way LyX is installed), extensions can be local/global etc.

I think a simple wizard that allows you to check which languages you need would maybe work best. This wizard would download a list with links to the latest dictionaries (probably OpenOffice extensions) from the LyX server.
