    Just an idea: maybe in the case mentioned, by parsing latex
stdout/stderr it will be possible to pinpoint the exact page number
where it fails, at least in most cases (assuming that the preamble is
ok)? Also, embedding some artificial messages into .tex file like
    "(lyx)      Processing inset 21..."

would allow for easier parsing than the standard cryptic ['s and ]'s.
