Because the script has to be changed in most cases too. For example in my
report I have to switch for subscripts also to sansserif for readability
reasons.
This works also with the insets, since they inherit the style from outside.
And if the oustide is already in sans serif a newly inserted script will be
as well.
But I only use/need sansserif and/or bold for the subscript. The rest of the
text is roman.
Having it in the text style dialog I'm free to do what ever I
want. For examples some subscripts are important in the text so that I
highlighted them by making them bold.
You can do that with the insets as well.
I could not set bold + sansserif + subscript in the dialog and then re-use this formatting via apply
last. But that is what I very often need. Apply-last would ease up things so much.
However, I find the current situation quite unflexible. For example in the
section heading I only need to make some text a subscript, in the normal
text I use subscript+sansserif and in some cases subscript+sansserif+bold
and in one paragraph subscript+sansserif+color=blue. (The text is about
non-stoichiometric chemical compounds.)
If you use sans serif in the normal text
But no, I don't. I only need these formattings for the subscript.
But we are not in the WYSIWYG-world. If you want to do this kind of stuff,
use an office package like libreoffice or MS Office.
Reads like a punch in the face, thanks.
Why should I leave LyX because of that? We provide the same features as a word processor and i
don't see a reason why we support text size, color striking etc. but not in the same dialog also the
text position. This has nothing to do with WYSIWYM/G but with usability.
Physical formatting
like adjusting the text size of scripts is possible, but there is no need to
make it easy, because it should only be used in exceptional cases. If you
need to do this more often it is a hint that something is wrong: Maybe you
use a document class that is not suitable for the kind of document you are
writing, maybe the document class or font package is of poor quality, maybe
you should use a character style instead.
Sorry, but I'm using LyX for years almost daily, I wrote most of its documentation and many layout
files. Please trust me that I know what I am doing. The report looks as fine as always only the
usability of sub/superscripts doesn't suit the needs.
