This even with Qt4 depends on the selected Qt GUI Style (Cleanlooks, Gtk, Plastique, adwaita...)
Scribus is having similar issues, for example, even qtconfig-qt4.


What about LyX's workarea (the yellow area where you type stuff)? Does
it have any bad performance?

Performance is good. The workarea does feel a bit tight (inset boxes in neighboring lines almost touch), the scrollbar is narrow and figures render too small. Check this:
