Recomputation of metrics is an open issue (not for 2.2 though). We could decide to have all metrics computed at any time. But this will probably not please people with huge documents (the largest I heard about was 1800 pages) and people with older computers. I can tell you that on my late 2006 iMac, keeping LyX snappy is not completely trivial.
