My old lyx (lyx-1.1.5fix1-1) is 2.5 MB. The new CVS-lyx is 56 MB.
Meaning that I will have difficulty using it on my old, recycled home
machine with only 32 MB. (Quite apart from the gcc update needed there.)

Why does it have to be that big? We're not competing with Mozilla, are
we? It also causes compilation (on a 256 MB machine) to take half a
minute just for executing the final ld even after a minimal change.
Development would be a lot more fun if it went quicker ;-)
