I have heard of millions of people panicking because of too many
options in software -- but those wouldn't even get as far as
considering LyX.  Still, it's a good idea to hide things that would
only confuse most users. For the issue at hand, greying out perhaps?
(and at the end of the list)

Math typesetting is intrinsically complex. Mathed has nothing to be
ashamed of. (And the panel is pretty much hidden today.)

Remarkably appropriate to all those people afraid of software giving
them too much freedom of choice :-)
