I just installed 1.3.7pre4 (after uninstalling prior versions) and had a mild adventure. During installation, I got a message to the effect that the configuration script had failed (and, indeed, it did not appear to run). I had the box to start LyX at the end of the installation checked, and it opened fine and appeared to function properly, from which I concluded that it had read the old configuration (which was not lost when I uninstalled the software). I closed LyX and double-clicked the icon to restart it, and it appeared at first that nothing was happening (no windows, no prompts). So I opened a process viewer and discovered that lyx.exe was in fact running, and was repeatedly invoking sh.exe. I took this to be the configuration script running, and indeed it eventually started pestering me to install LaTeX classes I don't have. After the configuration script completed, LyX started and worked properly.

I tried the same and obtained the message "Failed attempting to execute the configure script." But, in my case, Lyx did not run at all. lyx -dbg 2 returns the message "This application has requested a runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I unsinstalled pre4 and installed pre1 which works fine.
