Confirmed here. 1.4.0cvs can open, modify and save a gzipped file
saved by 1.4.0.

1. I can rename a.lyx.gz to a.lyx and lyx 1.4.0cvs can still open it.
(I like this feature)
2. 1.3.6 does not work
3. gzipped 1.3.6 lyx file can not be opened by 1.4.0cvs (should be a bug)

Between extensions .lyx.gz and .lyx, I prefer extension .lyx even if
the file is compressed. I can think of several reasons for this:
1. .lyx makes internal format change transparent to users. (consistency)
2. One less extension to handle under windows. Double click .lyx.gz
will start winzip, not lyx.
3. The first reaction for a lyx user, if he gets a .lyx.gz file and
does not know lyx can open compressed file directly, will be gunzip
it.
