Mr. Ressler:

As a new LyX user and a non-publishing, non-typesetting, non-word-processing
(yes, these are likely non-words... hopefully you know what I mean)
environmental consultant (groundwater and surface water characterization and
modeling), my comments may include my lack of understanding, but may be
stated in my comments as errors in the documentation. Please forgive me if I
am crossing versions or otherwise causing my own difficulties.

I recently began using the LyX Version 1.3.3-Win32 of Thu, Sep 25 2003. This
version includes some apparent errors with respect to interface references in
the "The LyX User's Guide" (where I obtained your contact information;
perhaps in other help documents as well). This version is stated to be, "an
experimental version of LyX for Win32, based on version 1.3.3."
(http://www.home.zonnet.nl/rareitsma/lyx/) and may have significant
differences with respect to the version applicable to the User's Guide.

Q. Can you provide any direction on how I can learn about converting existing
tex-format files to latex format? It seems this is needed to allow LyX to
import latex-format files. (I have a new client with a lot of tex files, and
I am trying to avoid looking like a complete novice to that client, so any
help at the most basic level will be appreciated)

Q. To whom should I ask questions when I get stuck while learning the basics
of LyX?

These comments include some basic issues (that you most likely are very aware
of; perhaps there is more than I have seen as a novice in LyX) that have been
encountered during reading and learning by practice in the Introduction,
Tutorial, and User's Guide:

reference to the "Document->Settings" apparently intending or not yet
reflecting the interface revision to "Layout->Document"

"Tools->Preferences" may intend "Document->Settings" but no "Tools" main menu
item is evident in my installation ("Preferences" is under "Edit")

"Layout | Document" includes "Numbering" as an item in a vertically-arranged
list of items, rather than "the Extra tab" referred to in the User's Guide;
this Numbering item includes "Number Depth" with "Section" and "Table of
contents"
