Agreed that version discrepancy is in place. I am obviously a novice in more
areas than just TeX in general and LyX specifically. I am fairly certain that
I obtained all of what I am using for LyX as one download package. Perhaps
the discrepancy can be attributed to the LyX application package being
identified as "experimental."
These issues are trivial, though, as I found the correlated menu/dialog/list
location of items of interest.
My inquiry about introductory file format/import difficulties that I have not
yet resolved from reading LyX help (intro, tutorial, user's guide, etc.) and
online/downloaded files remains:
Q. Can you provide any direction on how I can learn about converting existing
tex-format files to latex format? It seems this is needed to allow LyX to
import latex-format files. (I have a new client with a lot of tex files, and
I am trying to avoid looking like a complete novice to that client, so any
help at the most basic level will be appreciated)
NOTE: I did not mention earlier that the 'tex'-format files may be TeX but
not LaTeX.

Regarding my other question, "Q. To whom should I ask questions when I get
stuck while learning the basics of LyX?":

You seem to have accidentally checked out the 1.4.0cvs version of the
docs from CVS and tried to apply them to 1.3.x LyX.
