I'm partly confused whether you are talking only about lyx manuals or some other
files you have written.

i cant reproduce. my experiment with xpm files works fine. maybe you
have some odd convertors installed ?
give your example.

this shouldnt be. when you export latex files, you shouldnt go for its result
(and its parts) to any /tmp. look into generated .tex files, what are the paths
for your pictures. do they direct into /tmp/.. ?

i'm not sure what are your messages, but there may be problem with access
privileges - lyx tries to write result into the same location where the lyx
guide is and this is usualy not writeable dir..
one possibility is to copy lyxguide somewhere else or do just preview
and save its result in the preview program.
