Hi, Uwe - sorry for the delay in completing looking through the User Guide; I
have started again with the version on the wiki and looked at everything up to
but not including the appendices which I will look at another time.

John

1.2 How LyX looks:

First paragraph: second half

The mini-buffer appears in response to Alt-X but it does not appear by default.
The three final sentences would be better elsewhere in this guide. (Also I have
never used the mini-buffer and don't know what to do with it; so a more
detailed explanation would probably be helpful).

2.1 Basic file operations:

In the list of operations

Open Recent
Save all
Fax
New window
Close window

are missing

3.3.6.2 Itemize

Remove the sentence: 'Note that those of you reading this manual within LyX
won't see any difference.' just over half way through because there is a
difference even within LyX

3.3.6.3

The first enumerated paragraph and the first nested enumerated paragraph are
inconsistent with the rest of this section; I suggest:

1. Each item has a label.

(a) The type of label depends on the nesting depth.

3.3.9 LyX code

First itemize

(i.e. you can't ...)

3.4.1

First paragraph:

. . . blocks that inherit . . . list inside another list . . .

Below list

. . . inside a list . . .

3.4.2 What you can and can't nest

Second itemize

. . . inside things . . . inside them . . .

Description Nestable-inside

. . . inside other things . . .

Grayed out note at end of 3.4.2

. . . it is highly recommended not to do this because the aim is to create well
structured documents following typesetting guidelines whereas nested section
headings violate this.

3.4.4 Usage and general features

First paragraph

. . . an example to illustrate what we mean . . .

is more idiomatic, particularly in a manual.

End of 3.4.4

. . . inside item "A" . . .

3.4.5.1 Example 1

Nesting level #4

. . . inside "#3-a" . . .

Nesting level #4 list

. . . inside a Standard . . . inside "#3-a" . . .

3.4.5.2 Example 2

Replace 'resetting' with 'reset' in the last sentence.

3.5 Spacing

First sentence

. . . used to pressing ...

3.5.3 Vertical Space

Second paragraph

. . . LaTeX sizes which depend on the font size . . .

3.5.5 Forced Page Breaks

End of first paragraph to second paragraph

If you use a lot of Floats, LaTeX's page breaking algorithm can fail.
We recommend you do not use forced pagebreaks until the text is finished and
after you have checked in the preview . . .

3.5.5.1 Clear Page Breaks

First sentence

Rather than forced pagebreaks where the content behind the break is placed
directly on the next page, you can also clear pages while breaking them. That
means that the current paragraph is terminated and everything, including
unprocessed floats, from the earlier part of the document are placed behind it,
if necessary by adding pages.

3.6 Characters and Symbols

End of first paragraph

. . . for information on how this is done

3.7.1 Font Types

First description 'Vector'

Delete 'at very small sizes' the second time it occurs.

Second paragraph within first description

That could mean . . .

Second desciption 'Bitmap'

Near the end

. . . sizes that don't exist . . .

Next standard paragraph

. . . So one needs fewer font size definitions . . .

3.7.2 Document Font and Font size

Second itemize

. . . its glyphs are smaller than the ones from other fonts . . .

Third itemize

. . . developed for the LaTeX community . . .

3.7.4 Fine-Tuning with the Text Style dialog

List item Underbar

. . . hangover from the typewriter days . . .

Itemize Serif fonts

. . . at the ends of the strokes that form . . .

3.8.1 Overview

First paragraph

. . . We cover this information . . .

3.8.2.3 DVI

Add the paragraph, as amended below, to the Greyed out note OR make the note
part of the main text:

Because the DVI-viewer has to convert the image in the background to make it
visible when you scroll the DVI, this can slow down your computer when you
view the DVI. So we recommend you use PDF for files with many images.

3.8.2.4 PostScript

First paragraph

. . . as a printer language . . . as a "programming language" . . .

3.8.2.5 PDF

First paragraph

The “Portable Document Format” (PDF) developed by Adobe was derived from
PostScript. . . . uses fewer commands . . .

End of second paragraph

. . . recommend you use . . .

Final paragraph

We recommend you use PDF (pdflatex) because pdftex supports all the features of
PDF, is quick and stable and works without problems. The program dvipdfm is no
longer under development and therefore a bit outdated.

3.8.3 Previewing

Final sentence

To save the output, export your document.

(In fact, I never use export; I just use 'Save as' in the viewer - would it be
worth adding that as an option?)

3.8.4 Printing the File from within LyX

First sentence

Instead of exporting your file and then printing it, you . . .

3.9.1 Hyphens

Throughout this sub-sub-section opening quotation marks are used several times
where the second of each pair should be closing quotation marks
\textquotedblright

Enumerated paragraph

I am giving a presentation on LyX to my local user group on Wednesday and, in
order to set this information out, I created a table; the following is the
LaTeX code for it in case you think it is worth using.

\noindent \begin{center}
\begin{tabular}{|r|c|c|l|}
\hline
Name & Output & Made with & Used for\tabularnewline
\hline
hyphen & - & `-' & Word and line breaks\tabularnewline
\hline
en dash & -- & `-\texttt{\/}-' & From A--Z; pages 3--15\tabularnewline
\hline
em dash & --- & `-\texttt{\/}-\texttt{\/}-' & Dash --- there it goes
again!\tabularnewline
\hline
minus sign & $-$ & Ctl-m `-' & $x^{2}-y^{2}=z^{2}$\tabularnewline
\hline
\end{tabular}
\par\end{center}

3.9.2 Hyphenation

Second paragraph

LaTeX hyphenates almost perfectly, it only has problems with text in the
typewriter font and . . .

Third paragraph

The keybindings/shortcuts in this document consist of three letters with a
hyphen and a space in the form “A-b c”. LaTeX sees the hyphen “-” as a
hyphenation possibility.

3.9.3.1 Abbreviations and End of Sentence

Second paragraph

. . . what's an abbreviation does not work in all cases. . . .

Next to last paragraph

. . . because LaTeX will take care of this. . . .

3.9.3.2 Quotes

Final paragraph

These settings affect what . . .

3.9.5 LyX's Proper Names

First paragraph

You will certainly have noticed that the word “LaTeX” always appears with
characters in different sizes and heights. LaTeX is the name of the program
used by LyX and is therefore recognized as a proper name . . .

4.6 Floats

End of first paragraph and start of second

. . . when there are too many notes on the page.
Floats make it possible . . . tables can be spread evenly over the pages . . .

Third paragraph, third sentence

After the label . . .

Final paragraph

It is recommended that you insert . . .

4.6.1.1 Figure Floats

Second paragraph

This figure float also shows how . . .

Third paragraph

Normally only one image is inserted in a figure float, . . .

4.6.1.2 Table Floats

End of first sentence

. . . except for the . . .

4.6.1.4 Wrap Floats

Greyed out

. . . mess things up so that the float . . .

First itemize

. . . should preferably be inserted in the . . .

Second itemize

. . . be placed in their own paragraph . . .

Third itemize

. . . may cause trouble, so make sure that . . .

4.6.2 Rotated Floats

Second paragraph

. . . on their own pages (or columns, where you have a multi-column . . .

Third paragraph

. . . same as for normal floats; the . . .

4.6.3 Float Placement

Second paragraph

. . . the float will span both columns . . .

Description Here if possible:

try to place the float at the . . .

Description Top of page:

try to place the float at the . . .

Description Bottom of page:

try to place the float at the . . .

Description Page of floats:

try to place the float on its own page

Second paragraph after descriptions:

By default, each option has its own rules: . . .

Third paragraph from end

. . . when you change your document, this will often destroy . . .

5 Mathematical Formulas

Just a general point: the use of the singular 'math' is US; in most other
English speaking countries the plural 'maths' is used in exactly the same way.
Though LyX has used the US term 'math' in things like 'Math panel', I don't
think it would be necessary to change the screen interface if you did decide to
make this change.

(Both dialog and program were originally US spellings but are widely accepted
in computing environments (use dialogue and programme outside computing); math
is a more general term and so not widely used in English speaking countries
outside the US).

5.1 Basic Math Editing

Fifth paragraph

. . . outside the text as if they were . . .

5.1.8 Altering Spacing

First paragraph

. . .spaces that differ from . . . For example, the sequence a Ctrl+Space b:
appears in LyX as . [i.e. leave out parentheses] . . . they are negative
spaces. Here are two examples:

5.1.9 Functions

Third paragraph

. . . like \lim [or 'lim'], the macro changes where the subscripts are placed,
as described in . . .

5.2 Brackets and Delimiters

First paragraph

. . . brackets, it is better to use Math Panel's delimiter . . .

5.3 Grouping

I have never used the grouping macro to produce the results suggested here even
though I have studied maths to second year undergraduate level. So there is a
subtlety here which escapes me. Perhaps this sub-section should go in the main
Math manual rather than in this manual.

End of second paragraph

Within these braces you insert the grouped structure. Unlike normal braces, the
grouping braces won't appear in the output.

5.4 Arrays and Multi-line Equations

End of paragraph starting 'You can add more rows'

Adding or deleting columns can be done via the menu Edit->Math or the math
toolbar.

Before cases environment example

5.6 User defined math macros

First sentence

. . . for formulas which is very useful when you have equations of the same
form in a document several times.

5.7.1 Typefaces

Paragraph after greyed out box

. . . Here is an example where “N” . . .

Next paragraph

. . . So it is better not to use this feature.

5.7.2 Math Text

I have always used Ctl+m while in math mode to enter text mode; Alt M M results
in 'Unknown command'. Should it be (shortcut Ctl+m)?

5.7.3 Font Sizes

Middle of first paragraph

. . . set in the styles that LaTeX thinks are appropriate.

Last sentence

As an example here is a formula in the font size “largest”:

6.1 Cross-References

End of first paragraph

. . . We want for example to refer to the second item . . .

First sentence after emumerate

. . . or by pressing the . . .

Last sentence of same paragraph

. . . insert a label into a . .

Next paragraph

. . . the cross-reference window appears showing all the labels in the document.

Three paragraphs later

. . . recommended you use a . . .

Second paragraph after greyed out

. . . page of the referenced document part . . .

Three paragraphs later

. . . before the referenced label . . . ['before the label referred to' would
also be correct but less idiomatic]

Next to last paragraph

. . . non-existent . . .

6.4 Appendices

First paragraph

. . . as the appendix region. . . .

6.5.1 The Bibliography Environment

Third paragraph

. . . appear in the output as the number of the . . . Here are two examples . .
.

6.5.2 Bibliography databases (BibTeX)

Second paragraph

I think that for beginners, Nicholas Markey's 'Tame that BeaST' is a better
introduction; it's at
www.ctan.org{\//}tex-archive{\//}info{\//}bibtex{\//}tamethebeast{\//}ttb{\_}en.pdf

Fouth paragraph

Opening quotes needed before .bst

Sixth paragraph

. . . recommended you read . . .

Seventh paragraph

. . . This and other options are explained . . .

6.6 Index

General comment: the sub-sub-sections are really at a far too detailed level
and should be in Additional features.

End of first sentence

. . . proposed by LyX as the index entry.

Last paragraph

. . . inserted in the . . .

6.6.2 Page Ranges

Final paragraph

The commands “|(” and “|)” respectively start and end the index range.

6.6.3 Cross referencing

After example

where the braces . . . [i.e. lowercase w]

6.6.4 Index Entry Order

First paragraph

. . . We have created as an example the . . .

6.6.5 Index Entry Layout

Greyed out box

. .

Next paragraph before example

. . . following in the preamble

After the example

in the index . . . your publisher insists that definitions . . .

Last paragraph

. . . For more advanced tasks you . . .

6.6.6 Index Program

First sentence

When the index entry program xindy, which is only available for Linux, is
installed, LyX uses it for index generation; otherwise the program makeindex,
that is part of every LaTeX distribution, is used.

Second paragraph

makeindex is very old, no longer under development and has many pitfalls,
notably that it was developed with only the English language in mind. So it
fails to sort anything other than a monolingual English text correctly.

6.7.1 Nomenclature Definition and Layout

First paragraph

. . . field as LaTeX-formulas. . . .

Paragraph after example

delete 'hereby' [not needed in this context]

6.7.2 Sort Order of Nomenclature Entries

For these cases LyX allows you to put text into branches.. . .

6.9 PDF Properties

First sentence

Fifth paragraph

. . . If it is not already installed, you will find it . . .

6.12 Spell Checking

First paragraph

. . . aspell can be seen as a successor to ispell and it is recommended you use
aspell. . . . The chosen spell checker and its settings . . .

Fourth paragraph

By default, the dictionary file used is . . .

Fifth paragraph

. . . After a spell check you will be informed . . .

Description Escape characters

replacements.
The related words shown may not really be related to the word you are currently
checking; scrolling the list might help . . .

6.14 Change Tracking

First paragraph

When you work on a document collaboratively it is extremely useful to be able
to see changes that others have made highlighted in the document. You can then
decide if you want to accept a change or not.

Paragraph after list of icons

. . . pops up showing you information about the next change after the current .
. . jump through all the changes in the document.

Last paragraph

. . . You will find it in the TeX Catalogue . . .

6.15.2 Keyboard mapping configuration

First paragraph
