After picking up your response I went through it again.  I had committed
the unpardonable sin of *not following directions*!  Line#2 of README.bin
clearly said run .../share/lyx/configure.  I did.  Now its working.  It
has been formatting a print sample for about 10 minutes now.  I don't know
what is taking this long but LaTex seems to know what its doing.

.....It said "Requires Windows 95 or better"... So I installed Linux....
