The biggest font I could set on my Sun/Openwindows X environment was
by setting
\screen_font_menu -*-lucida-bold-i
in the lyxrc file
(you may only change the 4 first properties, apparently)
However, this may be too big on other x environments 
(with a X terminal emulation for instance).
And you must have the lucida in the font selector.

By the way, coming back to a old request, 
any easy way to make the grey background of the menus a bit lighter ?
Or the text color white over a dark background ?
That is rather a xforms question, I guess, but that could be also a colormap 
question with a quick answer...
