Note that you can also click anywhere on the math panel to make the
symbold go away. This seems reasonable intuitive (but not too much,
since it did not occur to you...).

This behaviour as been changed very recently, so you would not have
noticed it...
Note that if you configure LyX with --program-suffix=-pre (for
example), you will have a lyx-pre which uses directories .lyx-pre and
.../share/lyx-pre, so that it will not interfere with the ``stable''
version.
