It could be that the Alt key-sequences are being caught by the
window-manager.  This happens with mwm, but I don't know about others.

You mean, which is the left, center or right part?  Use <Ctrl>-<Tab>.  Put
the cursor on some part you want to move to the next place on the right,
and hit C-T.  Now, to move things to the left?  I use cut&paste.

You can also edit the LyX file.
