Well this will sound really stupid but the main problem for me was the
message from configure that it couldn't find
libforms
I am really so clueless that I didn't know they meant
libforms.so
So as you suggested I grabbed libforms.so from the other machine (where it
had been floating around from the past), put it into /usr/lib, and all is
well.
