<  I'll take a stab at this one. I wonder if what you need to do is specify
<  headings in |Layout|Document|Pagestyle. That gets page numbers to the top. 

Thanks.  Setting the Pagestyle to plain resulted in all page
numbers being placed on the bottom center.
