For what its worth, I am also very interested in answers to this
question. In particular, what is the best approach for modifying
existing document classes? For example, if "book" gives me 80% of what I
want but I need to add some additional styles for algorithms and axioms
and the like, should make a duplicate of the book textclass and modify
it? Is there someway to maintain upwards compatibility with future
releases of the official "book" class?
