Another data point.
I normally run lyx on my 16-bit X server without problems. I tried to run
it under VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) which acts as an X
server. Then lyx kept saying:
In flvisual.c[217]: Can't find an appropriate visual
This was very frustrating until I started up vnc with -depth 16 instead of
the 8 it was defaulting to. Hmm, when I ran xdpyinfo, it said the server
was 8-bit but TrueColor. Maybe the xform library would have been happier
with 8-bit PseudoColor.
