Please forgive me, I'm a complete newbie with LyX, LaTeX, etc. I hope
this is the right place to ask this question. I installed LyX 1.0.4
on my SGI machine a few days ago and it seems to be working. I read
the Tutorial, did the exercises, and have glanced at bits of the User
Guide. I subscribed to this list just moments ago.

I need to prepare an article for a conference proceedings which
requires the use of a sans-serif font family. I thought all I would
need to do is use the Document Layout popup to set "Fonts" to an
appropriate value: "helvet" is one of the choices. When I do this I
see no change, anywhere. The user guide cautions (in Section 3.5.2:
Global Options) not to expect a change on the LyX display. But I
do not see sans-serif text in xdvi or on the printed hardcopy.

I found that I could get sans-serif text using the Family menu on the
Character Style popup. In this case I saw sans-serif text in LyX, in
xdvi (after running much slower), and on the printed hardcopy.

What is wrong here? Should I have seen the change after using the
Document Layout popup? Does the fact that it works with the Character
Style popup but not with the Document Layout popup indicate an obvious
problem (perhaps with my installation or configuration)? Is using the
Character Style popup on my whole article the best work around?

Thanks for any prompt advice,
