This is normal. What the helvetica style does (it is not obvious, I
know) is to change the sans-serif font to helvetica (instead of TeX'
cmss font). You still have to select sans-serif to get this font.

The idea is that latex knows of 3 font families: roman (normal),
sans-serif and typewriter. What you do in the document popup is tell
what these fonts are. I agree that this is not clear and should be
improved, but...
