Did you have LANG, LINGUAS or any of the other locale-specific environment
variables set when building lyx-1.1.4pre2?
I had a problem with building lyx-1.1.4pre2 under Redhat-6.1 because some of
these variables were set and the configure/make/install process did
not install any lyx-specific localization files.
Try unsetting those environment variables and re-building and re-installing.
