I guess you can open this documents directly from your mailer into
LyX, isn't it? What you need is just that you already have an open
lyx and want to load the document in a new Buffer in the already
running lyx isn't it?

Well then you have to use the lyx-server. I'm not very experienced with
it but look at the Customization Help file to see how to set it up.

To load a file I just did (I did this just now for the first time to
test the stuff I tell you and know it works ;):

Put in ~/.lyx/lyxrc

\serverpipe "/home/jug/.lyx/lyxpipe"

Then if you start lyx you can do something like this:

echo "LYXCMD:echo:file-open:/path/to/lyx/file" >~/.lyx/lyxpipe.in

and it will open the file /path/to/lyx/file inside your already running
lyx in a new buffer :)
