Thanks for mentioning that, Juergen -- I'd forgotten about that when I 
made the XF86Config suggestion to Ramon.  Sure enough,

  $ cat .Xmodmap
  ! Use Scroll Lock as Compose key on PC101 keyboard
  keycode 78 = Multi_key

Of course, you can try it out first with the xmodmap command, e.g.:

  $ xmodmap -e "keycode 78 = Multi_key"
