A similar problem is only fixed in the cvs version 1.1.6cvs, I can provide
a patch against 1.1.5, but I do not know how to get the sources of 1.0.4
in order to do the fix.
The fix that I did lately involved the removal of an "optimization" that
skipped the latex (and bibtex) stages if the file wasn't changed. I do not
know the 1.0.4 source so I do not know if the optimization was there or if
it is another issue.
If this is the issue that bugs you I can try and explain what is needed in
order to fix this issue. It involves mainly removing some call to the
function isDviClean().
