At this point, I'm willing to settle for just getting the "References" text to 
not show up within the formatted document, preferably using Article Class.

Herbert Voss has been quite generous with help and suggestions, and his 
solution is exactly what I wish to accomplish.  However, it only exists within 
the Book class.  I'd prefer something which works in Article class since that 
class has the features I really need.
