I think there's a difference between using Fraktur (which I wouldn't,
indeed) or Sperrdruck. In my opinion, Sperrdruck is not a kind of
typeface (as Fraktur), but a way to emphasize text (like italics,
Smallcaps a.s.o.). I'm not a typographer and maybe Sperrdruck has a bad
reputation, but on the other hand, it has been used for centuries (and
is used until today). And it has some advantages, by the way: if you
want to keep emphasizes in a cited passage and you have to type
citations in italics (which is standard in my subject), Sperrdruck
looks better than italic/ plain changes.
And, last but not least, sometimes you have to do what your publisher
wants you to. So, I don't want to start a discussion about typographics
and I really appreciate LaTeX's strict typography, but sometimes you
have to walk your own way.
