Kenward,

(Firstly, my apologies to LyX users if this seems to stray away from from the main
concerns  of this mailing list.)

I recommend Debian.  It is excellent, incredibly well integrated, and has a
great email list.  From what I understand, even the unstable branch is
stronger than certain other dists... ;-)

Thanks for this.  As a matter of fact, I have just been looking at the Debian site.
I think I am convinced to take the plunge,  to uninstall Mandrake Linux from my
system and install Debian from an ftp site.  This seems to be  possible.

Missing library problem
------------------

I recently tried to run the ImageMagick program, convert:

    [sinnamon@smaug sketch]convert blah.svg blah.eps
convert: SVG library is not available (blah.svg) [No such file or directory].
convert: Missing an image file name.

It complained about a library not being available. It turns out that the library is on my
system (I think)  It's called:

libxml-1.8.9-3mdk (Presumably mdk stands for mandrake).

So, on my Linux system, it seems that there is an installed libxml package, but a
program  from another package (ImageMagick) is unable to find it.  I guess that
some mistakes are to be expected, and if it is free or virtually free anyway, I should still
feel grateful, but if another free Linux distribution, such as Debian can do better, I would be
interested  to know.

Questions re Debian
================

Can I ask you some questions, if you aren't pressed for time:

1. KDE/GNOME window managers
---------------------------
Does Debian include KDE and Gnome Window Managers (and others)
together with fairly current version of all the associated applications? Does it provide a choice
and an easy means to switch between the two? (I am currently using KDE).

2. Software building  problems
----------------------
Do you think that it  is likely that, when I download source packages, and try to install them
with
'configure' and 'make' that I won't be seeing too many error messages about
various header files or libraries not being found?  (I have had very little luck
these past few months with any downloaded source packages on Redhat 6.2)
I have had better luck with Mandrake Linux, but I have still experienced
problems.

3. Vector drawing Program crashes
--------------------------
Do you think that it is less likely that vector drawing programs such as Killustrator
and Dia will crash on a Debian Linux System?

Thanks again,

James
