Thanks for your help in trying to figure out what's going on,  Emile.
Reading your previous message, you are using the bundle to install,
right? Do you have the same problem if you use the installer? I'm not so
surprised that the bundle could mess something up if you already have a
MikTeX installation. But if just using the non-bundle installer messes
something up, that would be a bigger problem, in my opinion, since I
don't think it should touch your MikTeX installation (although I don't
know for sure, maybe there this a good reason to do so).
