Well, do you mean something like starting LyX, typing
'C-N C-M \mint a <down> b <down> x <down> x <down> F10 m' // [1]
and getting
'\frac{1}{2} a x^2 + \frac{1}{2} b x^2'
appended? Seems to work over here ;-)
Looks like some polishing is needed though...
