I don't use most of them, but I presume the assumption is that source files for various formats might contain some differences. If the length of the filter list is bothersome, I suppose you could always delete the ones you do not anticipate using (Remove button in the file handling dialog).
If the formats have been created by Reconfigure, I suspect that removing them will not help.
And indeed, there are differences with some of the variants (but not all pf them).
