math environments

Would anybody please help:

I need a (more or less complete) list of math "environments" together with
some description of their "special properties".

Something like:

$...$            - inlined
\(...\)          - inlined differs from $...$ by ???
                 
\[...\]          - displayed, numbered unless \nonumber given somewhere

\begin{eqnarray} - displayed, possibly multiple lines, numbered,...

\begin{alignat}  - ???, needs AMS

etc.
