That's related to the fact that (La)TeX math has a re-entering structure
which allows getting indefinitely (hm, to the stack size) in and out
of math mode, which is not possible in mathed.

What would be "native" \mbox support ? Doing the same in mathed, i.e.
having normal text blocks which could in turn include mathed blocks ?

I take the opportunity of this discussion tu stress again
the importance of a personal math panel in which you could pick up
math constructs (in fact macros) already used, because it is highly
related to the possibility to patch math constructs in mathed mode.
Is this currently in development ?
