I had this exact same issue.  I tried playing with the PS/PDF values to no 
avail (I probably would have gotten it eventually).

But instead of screwing with it any further, it just grabbed the most 
excellent "tex2pdf" Perl script that is floating around.  It will also create 
your hyperlinks and thumbnails (but not bookmarks, at least not with my pdftex 
0.13.x?).  I'll post the URL to the program when I get home (check 
SourceForge?).
