Apparently pdflatex doesn't like the american language definition in
article class. Anythime I try to pdflatex something as american I get

! LaTeX Error: Missing \begin{document}.

See the LaTeX manual or LaTeX Companion for explanation.
Type H <return> for immediate help.

 ?
It works great if the language is english.
Unfortunately I like to be american so I can spell color and other words
in their american versions when running ispell. It's not easy to change
from American to english, because LyX seems to prefer to keep the language of each
table element in american (or english) and I have to edit the .lyx file with
vi and remove loads of language defs.
[is this a feature or a bug?]
Currently I edit the file in as language american and export as latex
change the article language to english and run pdflatex by hand to make pdf's.
Its not impossible but annoying.
Anybody conqueror this problem?
