Norm,

  ghostscript versions < 6.0 have several problems. Version 6.5.0 is
reported to be buggy, but 6.5.1 and higher are reported to be much more
stable.

  I would suggest regenerating your eps results from xfig using the newer
gs. I don't know about that component, but the ps2pdf function was terrible
before 6.0 so the eps function may be in the same situation.
