What version of LyX are you talking about?

1.2.0 tries to match on-screen appearance with the LaTeX output - which
is 'centered on the equation axis'?

Not centering the delimiters gives funny results when writing things like
(a^2)(b_i).

Usually one can enter these directly using the Compose key. � is
Compose-"-o.
