Support for \hbar and other symbols has been in 1.2.0 for a long time
(it actually supports every latex+amsmath symbol).
Try the following
cd lyx-devel/lib
./create_fonts_dir
xset fp+ `pwd`/fonts
xset fp rehash
../lyx
