There are some issues with the Qt port to Windows. Certain symbols don't display correctly at certain resolutions, and I think the right arrow is one of them. You can play around with Edit -> Preferences -> Screen fonts -> Zoom % and maybe get them to display.
Alternatively (and depending on how fast your processor is), you can turn on instant preview (Edit -> Preferences -> Graphics -> Instant preview), which will render your formulas as DVI output in the LyX window, on the fly. There's help for getting instant preview to work with XP on the LyX Wiki (http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/LyX/InstantPreview). You may need to install some more software.
