Thanks everybody for the valuable comments. turns out i dont have a math
option on my menu, and many of you share that fate. as it turns out, one
can easily open the math panel from the edit option. so i was saved.

or so i thought. upon closer inspection, the symbol that i require for my
disertation is not amongst those available in the math panel. so i
suppliment my original question with this: where does one find
supplimentary symbols, those that might not come with a standard build of
lyx for linux? presumably one can download a whole wealth of symbols and
fonts, but i cant seem to locate such a treasure.

thanks again for all your help.
