The syntax to use is actually {\scriptstyle v_2}. But I remember problems
with size changes in old mathedd, so a save method might be to define a
macro of your own (like \def\ss#1{{\scriptstyle #1}} as ERT and use
\ss{v_2} in math afterwards.
