Hello Steve, I had the same problem a long time ago, unfortunately I don't remember it very clear: As far as I remember I changed the spelling of language from "german" to "deutsch" in preferences dialog. After this, running Aspell were no problem anymore..... I am not quite sure if this means anything to your problem at all...:-)
