I never used v.1.1 but my prefered method to create a new document is
"lyx newdoc.lyx &"
lyx will ask me, whether I really want to create a new document. The old
v.1.1.6 will also ask me whether I want to create a new document, when I
open a nonexistent document. The new v.1.2.0 refuses to do so.

John Levon wants to remove the preferences option
"File->New asks for name"
He argues about things like "New..." or "New". IMHO "New..." without a
dialog box is a bug, consider "Print..." for example.

Please let John remove this preference option. You could introduce an
option "assume user knows what he is doing" instead, which will cause
lyx to create a new document without questions, whenever appropriate. Or
you could just assume the user knows what he is doing, without an
explicit option:)
