I have the same problem. When I include the pictures as eps and not as eps.gz, latex does find them and the pictures do show up in the final postscript file, but are not displayed onscreen: "Waiting for draw request to start loading". In the dvi-file that I view with kdvi, I also do not see the eps pictures. The dialog for including pictures does not filter for unzipped eps files, so selecting them is not 'natural', you seem to be doing something the system does not want. I'm running Lyx on SuSE 8.
