On most Unix systems you should be able to determine the file type with "file unknown.lyx". It should be "ISO-8859 text", ISO type may differ. And you might have a look on the file content with "less unknown.lyx" or "more unknown.lyx" or "cat unknown.lyx" or "pg unknown.lyx" or ... :)
