should see a line like this at the top of the document:
#LyX 1.2 created this file. For more info see http://www.lyx.org/
or in older LyX documents you will find:
#This file was created by <templin> Fri Sep 17 01:43:05 1999
#LyX 1.0 (C) 1995-1999 Matthias Ettrich and the LyX Team

Nope, I guess it's not a LyX document!

It looks like it's binary when I opened it in a text editor.

However, there are a few references to a JPEG among the unreadable characters:

IMG001.JPG

Are there any other programs that use .lyx as an extension?
(maybe on Windows)
