Abiword does open RTF. But it doesn't have table support yet. If I remember 
correctly, abiword and openoffice implements RTF differently. Abiword sticks 
strictly to the RTF specs, and openoffice tried to implement it the way M$ 
Word behaves (which is different from the specs). There is a bug report from 
abiword developers to openoffice developer somewhere in their site.

I am not sure if this was the problem, but probably it's, depends on how 
latex2rtf implement the converter.
