Do you mean having a common dialog for note insets, footnotes and margin 
notes? (That makes sense to me... then it'd be easy to change from one 
type to another).

I took a brief look at them. comment I've used in a hack 
        http://www.md.kth.se/~chr/lyx/notes/index.shtml#hack
and the footmisc package seems useful in general as well. Anyway, I've 
added your comments to http://www.md.kth.se/~chr/lyx/notes/
